Real Forgiveness

And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

– Mark 11:25

It is commonplace among us humans to believe that after we have forgiven someone, or we ourselves have been forgiven, that everything will “go back to normal” between the two of us!

When we look to Jesus and the forgiveness He gives those that believe on Him we can discern that this common belief is nothing short of wrong!

When we surrender to Jesus and receive His forgiveness we are FOREVER changed! The old is gone and the new has come- we are now new creations in Christ! We will have a “new normal” because the old has passed away! We will have different wants, desires, and affections- all centered on Jesus rather than ourselves!

His Forgiveness changes us in every aspect! It brings us into His service!

When we speak of forgiveness in human terms much of the same will apply. Depending upon the people and factors involved, forgiveness can mean reconciliation but it can also lead to a continued separation. We forgive because we have been forgiven- we forgive to release the powers of darkness from having any hold on us- we forgive because we too have fallen short in many ways with others! We don’t forgive on the surface so that things “go back to the way they were!” That form of forgiveness is shallow, humanistic, and ineffective- and if we peel back the surface we will find continued anger and bitterness underneath- indicating that was not real forgiveness after all!

Real forgiveness seeks nothing in return- it frees us from bondage and has no expectations! It’s realizing that apart from Christ we are lost and looking to fill the void in our souls, our spirits, our very beings! Having not been filled with Christ- having not been born again through Him- we have no idea how to forgive despite our best efforts and attempting to accept fake forgiveness apart from Him will just continue to leave us unchanged and unfulfilled!
