For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.– Galatians 1:10
Volumes could be written about the implications of straying from the commands made in Galatians 1:1-10. Suffice it to say, straying from the pure gospel of Jesus Christ is not advisable for many, many reasons- the least of which is being accursed by God Almighty!
This morning my eyes were drawn to the last verse of scripture. It seems we are most apt to stray from the pure true gospel when we seek to please others. Who are these others you ask? Don’t be surprised if I tell you that a great MAJORITY of the time it is YOU yourself not some outside force or person!
Myself you say?
In an attempt to avoid total surrender to Christ, and to thus please our flesh & appease our deceitful hearts, we persuade ourselves that Christ would have us do this or not do that; or to go here and be seen doing this; or to believe this but not that; etc.
We will cherry pick scripture to suit ourselves and our beliefs and wants. Are we prone to drinking daily? Ah, Jesus’ first miracle was turning water into wine! Do we have family members or friends living in open sin (or is it us even?) and we don’t want to be seen as mean or judgmental? “Judge not, least ye be judged and Let the one without sin cast the first stone” becomes our banner theme and shuts our mouths from warning those we love of the truth!
In other words- we are deciding what, how, when, where to serve God. We so grieve the Holy Spirit! We convince ourselves that He understands and persuade ourselves that we are in the right and, therefore, in right standing with God! This is a most dangerous place to be if we truly wish to be servants of Christ Jesus!
Let us therefore resolve to please God above ourselves, above anyone else in our lives! We want to hear Him say, “well done good and faithful servant!” not “depart from me you who work lawlessness!” What will it profit us if we gain the whole world but loose our own souls? What will we give in exchange for our souls?
Surrender, complete, no matter the cost, yields forth abundant fruit that is pleasing to our Father in Heaven and a blessing to us beyond measure! I am praying that be our focus and delight!
