For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.– Hebrews 3:14-15
Remember when we first came to believe on Jesus Christ; I mean when we really grasped and understood who He is and just what it is He has done for us? Do you remember? I would liken the feeling to an explosion of relief; the most intense and overwhelming “Aha!” moment a person could ever experience; a burning love that permeates every fiber of a person’s being; seeing all things line up neatly in the filing cabinet of life as an understanding of the who, what, when, where, and why’s of life are made clear for the first time- all the pieces of the puzzle fitting together- so many questions finally answered! Have you experienced that?
Have you kneeled at the foot of the cross in repentance and thanksgiving and awe and love and humility and with a burning desire to worship, honor, and glorify the Lord forevermore? Do you possess that confidence? Have you been there or does this sound foreign to you? Does it sound vaguely familiar, like something you have heard others talk about or maybe you have had experience with parts of what I have just described but have yet to experience the whole?
My friend if that be the case you should stop now and pray! Stop now and confess to the Lord! Stop now and resolve to read and meditate upon His Holy Word until you come to the point where it is all made real! Are you humbly seeking Him in all sincerity? Do you have fleshly ulterior motives in your seeking? Is your religion only surface deep? Are you simply checking off your religious box with no willingness to die to yourself in order to live in Him?
You must empty yourself at His precious feet or you will not obtain this blessed lasting confidence! It is the only way! Do you hold on to the things of this world too tightly? Are you putting your confidence in man: in your pastor, in your community, in politics? Are you searching for all things to be made new so as to avoid suffering for yourself? Are you being selfish? Why should we avoid suffering when our sanctification is made perfect through it? Have you truly been washed in the blood of the lamb?
It is so easy to be hardened in heart, especially when you are clinging to your sin and insisting on going your own way- a way that the Bible tells us leads to death (Proverbs 14:12). Your heart will surely stay hardened, or return to that state, if you refuse to fully surrender to the Lord! We must surrender all of our opinions, our ideas of how things should go or be, our wants, our goals, and our desires to Jesus. We must die to ourselves, and when we do, we will be pleasantly surprised and blessed to have the desires of our heart granted, while we ever walk in full confidence and assurance of who it is we serve to the glory of God the Father! Amen!
