But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement.
– Matthew 12:36 KJV
There are many verses of scripture that are just downright terrifying to think about and, to me, this one is definitely in the top 10 of them. Imagine standing before Jesus Christ and giving an account of EVERY idle word you have spoken! Imagine trying to excuse yourself for that time you mocked your friend; gossiped about your neighbor to your other neighbor; or what about that time you disrespected your mom; and don’t forget when you gave that unsolicited fleshly advice to a weaker brother in the faith causing him to question the will of God in his life! How terrifying!
We will NOT be able to justify our crude, idle, slanderess, flesh seeking words in that day and we will have absolutely no defense or advocate if we are not born-again believers in Christ Jesus! Our first step should be seeking the Lord with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength! We do that by the deliberate disciplined daily reading of and mediation upon His word- the Bible. We make a conscious effort to seek Him first, above all else- seek ye first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33)!
Memorizing certain scriptures, like today’s verse, will serve us well as it works to keep us in the Spirit and out of our flesh- and in this particular case- goes a long way in helping to tame our tongues to the glory of God! After all, His glory should always be our priority!
