Looking Under The Surface

And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

– Genesis 28:18

The Word of God is amazing! Most verses of scripture are layered in meaning and it is always joyous to me when I discover another one and another one and another one. The more we read and meditate upon the Word the more sure- surer than anything else in the world- that it is, in FACT, with ALL certainty, the TRUTH spoken from the very mouth of God! Men, despite their best efforts, their intelligence, or their wisdom could NEVER create such a beautiful cohesive volume of truth!

Here in today’s verse of scripture we find a beautiful example of this. In this passage from Genesis, the very first book of the Bible which dates to the beginning of time, we find the outline for following the Lord Jesus as His disciple. Jesus, of course, existed from the beginning but would not come in the flesh, as a man, as the Word made flesh, until around 4000 years later. The entire Bible testifies to His coming and is divinely inspired to show us The Way to salvation and eternal life.

Let us now dissect and use other verses of scripture to show the meaning, and thus the way, to life laid out for us here in Genesis 28:18:

  • And Jacob rose up early in the morning…”
    • Jesus Himself gave us this example in Mark 1:35: “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.”
    • In Psalm 5:3 David, a man after God’s own heart, does the same: “My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.”
    • And Abraham, the father of our faith, follows the same example in Genesis 19:27: “And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:”
  • “…and took the stone that he had put for his pillows…”
    • Jesus Christ is that stone, that spiritual Rock, that we are to rest in and upon as per 1 Corinthians 10:4: “And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.”
    • Jesus tells us in Matthew 11:28: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
    • And in Hebrews 4:11 we told what is that thing we should labor for: “Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.”
    • We find rest in the LORD Jesus when we read and prayerfully meditate upon His Word. It is God’s will that His sheep be sanctified through His Word, Jesus Christ, into His likeness as we see in Philippians 2:5: “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:”
  • “…and set it up for a pillar…”
    • The Lord Jesus is reliable; is The sure standard; and is worthy of our belief and trust as Isaiah 28:16 reassures us: “Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, A tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: He that believeth shall not make haste.”
    • He provides all that we need to live in safety as we see here in Psalm 18:2: “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”
  • “…and poured oil upon the top of it.”
    • Exodus 40:9 gives us an example of how God Almighty, from the beginning, used oil to consecrate that which is set aside as Holy: “And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the vessels thereof: and it shall be holy.”
    • In Exodus 29:7 the Lord directs Moses to anoint Aaron as the first priest of His chosen people: “Then shalt thou take the anointing oil, and pour {it} upon his head, and anoint him.”
    • Aaron, and all other priests that followed after him, were limited in service due to death. Psalm 110:4 tells us that Jesus, on the other hand, will sit as high priest forever: “The LORD has sworn and will not change His mind, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”
    • Jesus, that great High Priest and rock of our salvation, is to be consecrated in our hearts, minds, and spirits as Lord. Only those that surrender to Him now will be saved but all WILL confess as Philippians 2:9-11 makes clear: “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Look at the beauty and depth of meaning we uncovered in just this one verse of scripture from Genesis! I pray that we all would ask the Father in Heaven to give us continued discernment and understanding as we prayerfully meditate upon His Holy Word and that we would never just skim over the text again taking it at face value only! Let us give in, and be ready to surrender, realizing that as we read the Word, He will read us.

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” – Hebrews 4:12
