In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.– Genesis 3:19
On my morning walk yesterday I happened to look down and see the above picture laying on the ground beside the sidewalk. I glanced over and read the scrap of paper and then commenced to walk on. I did not get very far, maybe 5 or 6 steps, and I turned around and went back to take this photograph. As I took the photo and read again the words on that ripped piece of paper, I immediately thought of todays verse of scripture.
We sure like to lie to ourselves and that advertisement is solid proof of that- “Your skin is forever take care of it!” And we do- we spend countless amounts of money on skin care products, make up, cosmetic surgery and so on in a futile effort to take care of something that is made of dust and will soon return there. We have a hard time accepting that fact so we placate ourselves with one fallacy after another. If you tell a lie long enough you can almost fool yourself into believing it is true. Such it is with us humans.
But we should take a second long hard look at the photograph and then we should meditate upon that verse of scripture from Genesis. Look how that lie is ripped out of the pages of a magazine or other publication- ripped out. God’s Word rips apart and annihilates the lies of the flesh; the lies of man. Lets look even deeper and examine just what that scrap of paper is laying on- dead, decaying leaves that will soon disintegrate into dust. Here we have the truth displayed for us- we can see it with our eyes- from dust thou art, and unto dust thou shalt return. Over the past week or so I have been watching, as morbid and gross as this is, the disintegration of the corpse of a little possum that was struck by a car in our neighborhood. Slowly I have seen this truth unfolding for me- form dust thou art, and unto dust thou shalt return.
So, we have now faced the truth presented to us in this photograph. We know that we lie to ourselves in order to avoid the truth; we know that God’s Word rips apart these lies; and we know that our bodies are made of dust and to the dust they will return. But now we must go one more step. If our skin is not forever, then What is? What can we count on to last forever? The answer: Eternity! Eternity is forever and there are ONLY two places we can go once our bodies die- heaven or hell. The Bible is clear about this truth and our conscience testifies to this truth whether we choose to admit it or not! That being the case, it only makes sense that we should take the utmost care in where we will spend it- heaven or hell? We should invest our time wisely in growing in the knowledge of the Lord- fearing Him is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge- and that can ONLY be done by believing on the Only Begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ!
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. – John 14:6
