We can bring out the polish and scrub brushes but try as we may we will not succeed in washing ourselves clean!
We just cannot reach deep enough to get to the really dirty spots within ourselves! We can’t even see those terrible stains and blemishes with our bare eyes! It takes the light of Christ Jesus beaming down upon them to bring them into sight!
We have to get close enough to Him to allow His cleansing gaze to penetrate our darkest parts if we ever wish to be pure of heart! We cannot even begin to comprehend our darkness despite His light according to John 1:5- And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
And let us not forget Jeremiah 17:9- The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Well, it’s not you and it certainly is not me! Thankfully the next verse of Jeremiah reveals the only one who can know our hearts!
I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. (Jeremiah 17:10)
It is God who knows our hearts and it is Him alone that can cleanse our hearts and make them pure!
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. – Ezekiel 36:26 KJV
This pure new heart will be one that is born again by the Spirit of God! A heart that gives the recipient spiritual eyes to see!
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. – John 3:3 KJV
